Cool pavement coating technologies, projects and research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will be discussed in a free upcoming webinar sponsored by Durability + Design.

Cool Pavements for Cool Communities,” a D+D Education Series Webinar, will be held from 11 a.m. to noon ET Aug. 1.

With summer in full swing and record temperatures reported across the United States, cities are looking for ways to combat a phenomenon known as the “urban heat island effect.”

One way to help cool sweltering cities is to cool pavements with solar-reflective coatings, according to the Berkeley Lab.

The webinar will explore the use and benefits of cool pavement technologies.

In addition to providing research updates, the webinar will answer the following questions:

  • What are cool pavements?
  • How cool is cool?
  • What are the benefits of cool pavements?
  • Which cool pavement technologies are available?

Participants may register here free.

About the Presenters

Presenter Haley Gilbert is a principal research associate with the Heat Island Group at the Berkeley Lab.  She holds a M.S. degree with a focus on environmental design from Yale University and is a LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional).

Haley Gilbert

Haley Gilbert, principal research associate with the Heat Island Group at Berkeley Lab, will present the webinar.

Gilbert is leading the Heat Island Group’s “Cool Communities" project to provide and develop technical assistance and resources on the use of cool roofs and cool pavements in California. In addition, Gilbert is the liaison between the group's research staff and industrial partners, local government collaborators and other stakeholder organizations.

Prior to joining the Berkeley Lab, she worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency coordinating green building and sustainability projects in New York and New Jersey.

Presenter Benjamin Mandel is a research assistant with the Heat Island Group at the Berkeley Lab. In this role, he provides support on "Cool Communities" project efforts including technical seminars and stakeholder meetings relating to the adoption of cool pavements and surfaces by California cities and schools.

Benjamin Mandel

Benjamin Mandel, a research assistant with the Heat Island Group, is also presenting.

Mandel also provides research assistance to former California Energy Commissioner and Berkeley Lab Distinguished Scientist Emeritus Dr. Arthur Rosenfeld, in work including enhanced resilience to extreme heat events in U.S. cities and the use of cool roofs to improve indoor thermal comfort in India. Prior to joining LBNL, Mandel worked as an assistant economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Presenter Kurt Shickman is the executive director of the Global Cool Cities Alliance. Shickman received his M.S. with a focus on Energy Policy and Economics in 2007 from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Kurt Shickman

Kurt Shickman, executive director of the Global Cool Cities Alliance, will also present the cool pavement webinar.

Prior to joining the Alliance, Shickman was the director of research for the Energy Future Coalition and the United Nations Foundation’s Energy and Climate team. His work involved building broad and diverse coalitions of stakeholders around key clean energy and climate change policies at the local, state, and federal level with a particular emphasis on dramatically scaling up the deployment of energy efficiency in existing residential and commercial buildings.

He has also worked in management consulting and corporate finance for several multi-national firms including Royal Ahold, MCI Worldcom, and Federal Realty Investment Trust.

The webinar is sponsored by Quest Construction Products.
