In a clear sign of the times, a Nevada building materials maker has developed a plaster product that can reportedly protect homes and buildings from gunfire.

The interior protective coating, called BallistiCrete, has been tested against high-powered guns and rifles, including a 7.62 AK-47, .357 Magnum, .45 Magnum, Uzi automatic, and Desert Eagle .50 caliber, the manufacturer says.

Manufacturer GigaCrete says the easy-to-apply coating can turn nearly any room into a protected "safe room."

“BallistiCrete can stop [bullet] penetration into the structure,” according to building material manufacturer GigaCrete, based in Las Vegas. The company recently demonstrated its product and testing for several local TV stations.

The protective interior coating is recommended for use in neighborhoods hard hit by drive-by shootings, banks, schools, police departments, military installations, embassies, restaurants, hospitals, retail stores, safe rooms, house interior walls, offices and anywhere requiring bullet resistance.

Formulation, Features

Developers Andrew Dennis and Michael Johnson say the coating is formulated using a combination of limestone, magnesium and a proprietary binder.

“The superior, ceramic-like strength and hardness qualities are designed to flatten projectiles instantly upon impact, thereby creating greater resistance to penetration,” according to the company.

Moreover, the product is reportedly zero-VOC; meets GREENGUARD emission level requirements; resists mold and mildew growth; and complies with fire protection standard requirements when applied over EPS foam.

How it Works, Application

The mesh-impregnated, noncombustible coating forms a “strong bond” with many substrates, including foam, cement blocks, cement board, gypsum board (drywall) brick and stucco—with tensile bond strength exceeding the strength of the substrate in many cases, the company says.

It can be applied as a single coat from 5/8 of an inch or incrementally layered up to two inches thick, depending on application. A paint finish is recommended after complete curing has taken place in five days.

Local TV news stations, including this NBC affliate, have visited the Las Vegas warehouse where the coating developers test the bullet-proof product.

BallistiCrete is a natural off-white color and is pre-blended and mixed with conventional plaster mixing equipment. Application methods include pumps, sprayers or hand troweling.

The coating comes in a two-part package. Working time is approximately one hour at 60-70°F and can be finished smooth, stamped or textured, the company adds.

Market for Coatings

Dennis and Johnson say they have already contracted with several police departments and fire departments, as well as the FBI. Interest in the product is huge, they say.

“Alas, it’s a dangerous world,” Dennis told reporters. “This is a product whose time has come.”

“We think we’re at the tip of the pyramid of what we can do, and it will branch out in many, many directions,” he added.

GigaCrete manufactures high-performance coatings and "high-speed house" building systems. Its portfolio includes insulated steel building systems and waterproof stucco.
