Benjamin Moore's newest color collection is 250 years old.

The Williamsburg Color Collection features 144 colors that existed in the 18th and 19th centuries—from muted, creamy neutrals to bold, orangey reds.

The new colors are based on pigments originally developed more than 250 years ago.

The timeless colors are available in Benjamin Moore’s Aura, Regel Select, Advance and Grand Entrance paints, as well as pint samples.

Team Effort

The Montvale, NJ-based paint manufacturer teamed up with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to develop the hues that bring together history, science and design, the company says. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a nonprofit center for history and citizenship that oversees the restored colonial capital in Williamsburg, VA.

“This work showcases the close collaboration between two firms steeped in a rich heritage, both with a passion for bringing history into the home,” said Carl Minchew, Benjamin Moore’s vice president of Color Innovation and Design.

Benjamin Moore worked with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to develop the historic palette, which features 144 colors available in several brands.

“The [collection] offers our customers beautiful shades in a palette of amazing, accurate colors that are as stylish today as they were 250 years ago.”

Research, Technology Involved

To develop the array of shades, Colonial Williamsburg’s research team of historians and conservators examined period documents, paint samples, wallpaper and architectural fragments.

During that process, the team discovered “fresh and unexpected color findings,” the paint maker said.

Then, Benjamin Moore scientists studied the pigment composition to match shades and ensure the highest degree of authenticity to the original hues, the company said.
