The global antimicrobial coatings market is on track to reach to $3.3 billion by 2018—doubling its value in six years—with North America leading revenue and demand, a new market forecast concludes.

The surge is being driven by new coating technologies that can improve indoor air quality and ward off microbial growth on medical devices and plastic packaging, according to the global market-research firm Transparency Market Research of Albany, NY.

Breakthroughs in antimicrobial coatings, which inhibit or restrain the growth of microorganisms over a surface, have helped to fuel the market.

Antimicrobial Coatings Market –Global Industry Analysis, Market Size, Share, Trends, Analysis, Growth and Forecast, 2012-2018” breaks down the market by product types, applications and geography, while providing analysis of revenues and volumes.

The analysis includes antimicrobial powder coatings, surface modifications and coatings, and evaluation of the market on the basis of microbes such as E. Coli, Listeria, Pseudomonas and others.

The report predicts that the total market, valued at $1.6 billion in 2012, would reach the $3.3 billion mark in 2018.

North America Stars

North America is expected to be the fastest-growing market in both supply and demand, with a predicted Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13.2 percent between 2012 and 2018, according to the study.

“North America has traditionally been the most accepting region for newer technologies and practices which enhance human health and quality of living,” according to the firm.

“With the huge importance given to medical and healthcare in general, the demand for antimicrobial coatings has been and will be the highest in North America.”

Asia-Pacific is the second-largest market for antimicrobial coatings and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.3 percent between 2012 and 2018. Europe is No. 3, with an expected CAGR of 10.6 percent in the same period, the study said.

Silver: Pluses and Minuses

Active silver has emerged as the most widely used raw material for antimicrobial coatings as it is believed to show the highest efficacy levels compared to other compounds, according to the report.

On the other hand, health issues associated with the use of silver, regulations governing their use and questionable efficacy of the coatings used in apparel may inhibit the market, the firm noted.

Powder Push

Worldwide, the antimicrobial powder coatings demand is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.4 percent by volume, and a CAGR of 9.1 percent by revenues, from 2012 to 2018.

Health concerns over the use of silver in antimicrobial coatings will constrain market growth, the report said.

Surface modifications and coatings—accounting for the larger of the two product-based market shares—are expected to grow at CAGR of 8.8 percent by volume and at CAGR of 12.2 percent by revenue from 2012 to 2018, the report said.

Uses: Indoor Air Quality, Health Care

Application segments for antimicrobial coatings analyzed in the study include indoor air quality, mold remediation and medical/health care.

Antimicrobial coatings demand for indoor air quality is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 12.8 percent, while the medical/health-care market demand for antimicrobial coatings is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.6 percent in the study years.

Various coatings and products containing antimicrobial substances are being put to use as an aftercare method, growing the mold remediation market segment.

“With the realization that indoor air pollution can cause more harm to health, there had also been a noticeable rise in the use of antimicrobial coatings in improvement of indoor air quality,” Transparency Market Research reported.

Moreover, hospitals and health-care centers have a need for antimicrobial atmosphere, and coatings have been adapted accordingly for exclusive use in medical locations.

Mold Remediation Surge

However, it’s the mold remediation segment that is expected to grow at the fastest pace, with a CAGR of 13.1 percent, according to the study.

“In the case of mold formation, various coatings and products containing antimicrobial substances are being put to use as an aftercare method,” the firm said, adding that most of the buildings where mold aftercare is necessary are older than five years.

The report also provides market data on other segments such as antimicrobial textiles and food.

Players in the Game

Some of the market players include AkzoNobel N.V., Sherwin-Williams Company, Dow Microbial Control, Diamond Vogel Paints, BASF, DuPont, Nippon Paint Co. Ltd., RPM International Inc., Royal DSM N.V., and Sono-Tek Corporation.

Transparency Market Research said it analyzed business strategies employed by these companies, with the aim of providing a bird’s-eye view of the antimicrobial coatings market and the global positioning of various market players.
