Facility managers, engineers, and consultants may now obtain training and certification to participate in a growing program to increase the sustainability of federal government buildings.

The Green Building Initiative (GBI) has developed a Guiding Principles Compliance Course with Optional Personnel Certification that trains qualified individuals to become expert users of the group's Guiding Principles Compliance environmental assessment, rating, and certification system.

Certified compliance personnel must possess a "demonstrated knowledge of green building and management practices, expertise with the Guiding Principles Compliance assessment protocols, and familiarity with the GPC Survey and third-party assessment process," according to GBI.

Government Building Sustainability

The program covers the Green Building Initiative's so-called Guiding Principles assessment requirements for U.S. government buildings as mandated by Executive Order 13514.

Green Building Initiative

The Veterans Administration campus in Columbia, SC, is among the federally owned facilities that has met the Green Building Initiative's Guiding Principles.

Signed in 2009, EO 13514 requires that at least 15 percent of a federal agency's existing buildings above 5,000 gross square feet meet the Guiding Principles by fiscal year 2015.

To help federal agencies and their contractors meet these requirements, the Green Building Initiative launched the Guiding Principles Compliance Assessment Program.

The principles are a set of established criteria that employ integrated design, energy performance optimization, water protection and conservation, enhancement of the indoor environment, and the reduction of material impacts as best practices to achieve federal sustainability goals.

GBI's program has been used to certify more than 250 buildings during the last 12 months.

Helping Agencies Comply

"We applaud the federal government's initiatives to enhance the sustainability of their buildings and are pleased to play a role in helping agencies comply with EO 13514 through our new training and our Guiding Principles Compliance building certification program," said GBI president Ward Hubbell.

The Green Building Initiative is a nonprofit organization and ANSI Standards Developer dedicated to accelerating the adoption of building practices that result in energy-efficient, healthier and environmentally sustainable buildings by promoting credible and practical green building approaches. The organization provides the Green Globes building and certification that is used as an alternative to LEED.
