In its effort to revamp Philadelphia’s William H. Gray III 30th Street Station, Amtrak recently released its shortlist of four teams to be master developer on the historic project.

“The selection of the four teams is a significant milestone, as it represents the next step in realizing the future vision of the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station,” Amtrak Senior Program Manager Natalie Shieh said.

“By partnering with the right development team, Amtrak will update this major transportation hub as a world-class gateway for the traveling public and Philadelphia.”

The Project

Updating the nearly 100-year-old facility—the third-busiest station for Amtrak—is part of a larger $6.5 billion infrastructure plan known as the 30th Street Station District Plan, that has Philadelphia redeveloping about 175 acres of rail-yard site over a 35-year period.

The plan was devised and introduced about two years ago, after Amtrak led a $5.2 million study along with Drexel University, Brandywine Realty, SEPTA and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The work on 30th Street Station is seen as the first major step in the project, and so far Amtrak says it has invested $100 million in refurbishments to the building, including improvements to the facade, restrooms, elevators and escalators, and the restoration of the bronze entrance doors.

The team that is being put in place now will assist in introducing new customer amenities, updating the retail and commercial potential of the station, enhancing traffic flow and expanding the station’s concourses to accommodate anticipated increases in ridership. The study estimates that with all the development, the area should expect about 10,000 new residents.

Now, the firms will answer a request for proposals, and Amtrak aims to pick a team next year.
