More items for Maintenance + Renovation

Last week, the Las Vegas Convention Center District Committee unanimously recommended the approval of a $13.5 million contract for a builder representative to oversee the final phase of work surrounding the new convention center.

While work had already begun on the $935.1 million expansion, the new contract extends beyond that, encompassing renovations to the existing hall as well, which bumps up the price tag to $1.4 billion.

What’s Happening

The committee recommended for the builder representative a contract extension with Cordell Corp., which has already been serving as project manager. Cordell’s principal and owner Terry Miller has served as the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority representative on the expansion portion of the project.

Last week, the Las Vegas Convention Center District Committee unanimously recommended the approval of a $13.5 million contract for a builder representative to oversee the final phase of work surrounding the new convention center.

The committee was also given a construction update: Miller said, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, that “Progress is being made, and it’s all on schedule.”

Powerlines have been moved, multiple smaller buildings have been demolished and fill dirt has been placed. Now, Miller said, the contractor is drilling nearly 600 holes 40-70 feet deep for rebar cages that will be filled with concrete to form the underground columns for the building.

The joint venture of Turner Construction and Martin-Harris Construction signed a $758.1 million construction-manager-at-risk contract last month for the project. (TVS Design, along with TSK Architects, Simpson Coulter Studio, Carpenter Sellers Sel Gatto Architects and KME Architects designed the project.)

The JV also said last week that it is finishing up hiring subcontractors to meet requirements of Senate Bill 1, which designates 25 percent of the work to Small Business Enterprise-qualified subcontractors. It is also aiming to meet a self-imposed goal of hiring 14 percent minority-owned businesses and 7 percent women-owned businesses.

In terms of the new contract for Cordell, it proposes $545,000 a month during new construction and the early stages of renovation and $169,750 a month for the last year of the contract. It now goes to the LVCVA board for consideration on Nov. 13.
