Houston’s Astrodome will hit pause this spring on its $105 million renovation to make way for the rodeo.

The bulk of the makeover, which will effectively turn the stadium into an event space with added parking for the surrounding NRG Park, will get underway after the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which takes place from Feb. 25 to March 17.

Houston’s Astrodome will hit pause this spring on its $105 million renovation to make way for the rodeo.

Before that, though, a third and final phase of asbestos abatement must be completed, which will take roughly four months, according to officials.

The Project

Ryan Walsh, executive director of the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation, confirmed the abatement schedule as beginning as early as this week, but said that the official start of the other construction isn’t as set.

"Harris County is planning to begin redevelopment of the Astrodome in earnest immediately after the end of the Houston Rodeo 2019 show, but the exact date has not yet been determined," Walsh told the Houston Business Journal.

Plans for the historical landmark include raising the floor 30 feet to ground level, creating two new entrance lobbies and also two underground parking levels.

These changes will create more than 500,000 square feet of space while making room for 1,400 parking spaces below. The work is expected to take about 20 months.

Commissioners first approved the project in 2016 with a $10.5 million engineering and architectural phase. The Business Journal reports that Houston-based Kirksey Architecture firm and Walter P Moore were selected for architecture and engineering, respectively, while Vaughn Construction was hired as the construction manager at risk.
