OPEN Architecture, working in collaboration with the UCCA, China’s leading independent institution of contemporary art, recently revealed progress on a new museum made of concrete that will be camouflaged by the sand dune surrounding it, an almost-living structure dedicated to the dialog between the built space and its natural environment.

To create the dune museum, located near the Bohai Bay in northern China, the design team had the site excavated. A network of organically shaped concrete tunnels spanning 930 square meters (10,000 square feet) winds its way outward. Once the project is completed, the dune’s original state will be restored, and shrubs that help the dune hold its shape will be replanted.

Earlier this month, UCCA announced its partnership with OPEN to provide programming for the museum, dubbed UCCA Dune. Exhibitions will be designed to facilitate dialogue between the interior and exterior of the structure, as well as its place in the natural setting.

“Countless years of wind have pushed the beach’s sand into a dune along the shore several meters high, stabilized by low-rising shrubs and other ground cover,” the architecture firm writes on its website. “Inspired by children’s tireless digging in the sand, the museum lies beneath this mass of sand.”

Interior spaces vary in size, with a range of capacity from a large multifunctional gallery to other, more cave-like galleries. A spiral staircase leads visitors up to a lookout point on the sand dune, providing a relief from the museum’s darker interior. The structure's largest openings can be found in three caves along with western end of the building, each offering a view of the open sky.  There is also space for a café, a reception area and a community room.

OPEN is also working on a nearby sister institution for the Dialogue by the Sea project: The adjacent Sea Art Museum is designed to rise out of the water like a solitary rock. A walkway, only usable at low tide, leads into the ocean, connecting the two buildings.
