Efforts to preserve Frank Lloyd Wright’s work have reached a new level: The architect’s winter home and studio, Taliesin West, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, has been scanned and logged in a way that allows anyone with access to virtual reality technology to roam the in-depth portrait of the property.

In this online installation, the user is allowed to roam both the exterior and interior of Taliesin West, taking a closer look at the architect’s interpretation of organic architecture.

According to a press release from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, high-resolution, 3D scans were required to assist with the preservationists’ vision of making the property accessible to those all over the world, including those who cannot visit personally and those wtith mobility issues.

The Foundation also wanted to know more about the property. During Wright’s lifetime, he used Taliesin West as a laboratory to test out new ideas, which resulted in a lack of blueprints or diagrams for interested parties to rely on.

“Taliesin West is an extremely complicated building,” said Fred Prozzillo, vice president of preservation. “Everything is handmade, everything is custom, everything is designed with the environment.”

Information from these scans can be condensed into 2D blueprints, which will assist the Foundation in future preservation efforts. To help with the work, Leica Geosystems used its new 3D imaging system, the Leica BLK360.

The scanner takes 360-degree images while also creating a 3D point cloud that implements lasers to gauge dimensions. Once compiled, the data can be used to make choices regarding preservation and restoration. Matterport, a 3D media company, created the immersive 3D model.

“More than an architect of buildings, Wright was an architect of ideas whose time has come now with great urgency as we face great challenges to sustainability,” said Foundation CEO Stuart Graff.
