The Sherwin-Williams Company (Cleveland) has announced its 2019 Color of the Year as Cavern Clay, a warm, earthy tone that nods both to mid-century modern style and the American Southwest.

“We believe 2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s—with a twist,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing.

“In the coming year, we will embrace our pioneering spirits and artisan ingenuity. Our 2019 Color of the Year, Cavern Clay, embodies renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair."

The Sherwin-Williams Company (Cleveland) has announced its 2019 Color of the Year as Cavern Clay, a warm, earthy tone that nods both to mid-century modern style and the American Southwest.

Part of the Wanderer collection that was introduced earlier this year as part of Sherwin’s 2019 Colormix Color Forecast, Cavern Clay pairs well with materials such as leather, woodgrains and greenery.

“Cavern Clay is an easy way to bring the warmth of the outdoors in. Envision beaches, canyons and deserts, and sun-washed late summer afternoons—all of this embodied in one color,” said Wadden.

Sherwin says that the hue is a perfect backdrop for a variety of spaces such as offices or hospitality environments. It pairs well with other neutrals (Moth Wing, Dark Clove) for a sophisticated aesthetic, but can also look fresh when paired with white.

“Spaces like boutique hotels, restaurants and even offices are making an effort to create photo-friendly areas that are Instagrammable,” said Wadden.

“Cavern Clay is an ideal color for flattering and design-forward aesthetics—it plays well with many types of lighting, and brings this visual of the expansive and free outside world to interiors, resulting in open and versatile public spaces.”

I actually like it...unless it's the beautiful room, comfy chairs, pocketed ceiling and mountainous window view that I'm actually falling for
