Facebook’s presence in Menlo Park, California, recently expanded with the completion of MPK 21, a Frank Gehry-designed building that was built in only 18 months, topped with a 3.6-acre roof garden and a half-mile pathway.

According to Level 10 Construction, the company responsible for building the project, the 524,000-square-foot building is intended to gain LEED Gold certification.

Facebook Campus Expansion

With the factoring of greenery into the design, the structure blurs the lines between the indoors and the outdoors. The “town square” area is a green space with 40-foot-tall redwood trees, and what is known as “the bowl” provides a convening space as an amphitheater-style courtyard.

Equipped with an open office plan, MPK 21 is focused around encouraging teamwork and allowing staff to reach their full potential. Quieter areas allow for work that requires more focus. A pathway that runs the length of the building connects open offices, five dining areas, 15 art installations and a 2,000-person meeting space. Physical activity is also encouraged with the presence of walkways, outdoor areas and flexible work stations.

MPK 21 also features a reclaimed water system that will save roughly 17 million gallons of water each year. The roof includes photovoltaic solar panels that will generate 2 million kWh of electricity annually, and glazing along the buildings exterior allows for better natural lighting.

Moving forward, the campus will also include a community bike and pedestrian bridge over the Bayfront Expressway, connecting a two-acre park with a public plaza and event space.

“As we add offices in other cities in the Bay Area, we remain invested in Menlo Park, which will be our headquarters for the foreseeable future,” said John Tenanes, Facebook’s VP of global facilities and real estate. “It was important to us that MPK 21, which sits on a former unoccupied industrial site, be consistent with the natural environment and our neighboring communities.”

As part of the project, Facebook contributed $20 million in funding to affordable housing and rental assistance programs.
