U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced in late August that the U.S. Department of Commerce, working with the White House, is accepting nominations for the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board.

Board Nominations

Guidance from the advisory board will assist the National Council in addressing concerns over the national workforce. The Council’s plan includes:

  • Creating a national campaign to raise awareness, covering STEM education and the skills crisis;
  • Formulating a way to recognize companies that demonstrate dedication in workplace education, training and investment;
  • Expanding the number of apprenticeships and encourage increased spending in worker education; and
  • Creating guidelines to increasing the transparency regarding those completing education opportunities in the labor market.

“Since his inauguration, President Trump has sounded the alarm on the plight facing countless American workers and families,” said Ross.

“Addressing the skills gap will not only help workers find gainful employment but also provides a boon to businesses whose growth has been constrained by the current labor market.”

This isn't the first time that Trump has made orders regarding apprenticeships. In June 2017, he issued an executive order aimed at expanding federal apprenticeship programs, increasing funding for apprenticeships to $200 million while loosening restrictions on how they're regulated.
