Countertop Coating Recalled for Lead Levels

Vernon Hills, Illinois-based Rust-Oleum Corp. announced a recall of nearly 2,000 cans of paint last week after its Black Satin Countertop Coating was found to have excessive levels of lead.

The Details

Officials say that the one-quart cans were sold at Ace Hardware, Amazon.com, Homedepot.com and Walmart.com from June 2017 through February 2018 for about $20.

Rust-Oleum

Vernon Hills, Illinois-based Rust-Oleum Corp. is recalling nearly 2,000 cans of paint last week after its Black Satin Countertop Coating was found to have excessive levels of lead.

The product number and batch codes are printed on the bottom of the cans, with the recalled product listing product number 263209 and batch code P7612D.

The recall, issued on Aug. 30 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, says that consumers “should immediately stop using the recalled countertop coating and contact Rust-Oleum. Consumers who have not used the countertop coating will receive a full refund plus $25 to return the product to Rust-Oleum. Consumers who have applied the recalled countertop coating will receive a repair kit or replacement of the affected surfaces.”

No injuries or incidents have been reported regarding the product.

Other than posting the recall notice on its website, Rust-Oleum has not commented on the matter.
