The town of Harvard, Massachusetts, is soliciting contractors for various accessibility upgrades at the Old Town Library, a former site of the Harvard Public Library.

Founded in the late 1700s by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s father, the library began as a social library with its custodians and locations changing frequently. In 1886, a permanent ground for the library was built, which also housed the town’s post office, where it stayed until 1956.

The town of Harvard, Massachusetts, is soliciting contractors for various accessibility upgrades at the the Old Town Library, a former site of the Harvard Public Library.

The building underwent a major renovations in 1902 and 1981, and in 2007 the site of the library was relocated. The old library grounds are currently leased by the Harvard Cultural Collaborative, which uses the building as a community center and cultural exhibit space.

Bids are due for this project by Sept. 12.

Scope of Work

The awarded contractor is responsible for the preparation and coating of specified gypsum boards; interior wood doors and trim; and exterior wooden windows and trim, in addition to interior handrails.

When preparing new and existing interior/exterior gypsum and plaster surfaces for coating applications, the contractor is responsible for filling all cracks, holes and defects. These surfaces are then to be washed and scraped or sanded as necessary, followed by spot-sealing. After all surface preparation is complete, the contractor may then coat these surfaces with one coat of a latex primer and two coats of an eggshell latex paint.

Exterior and interior wooden surfaces scheduled to receive coatings are to first be smoothed by sanding or use of steel wool, then washed clean. Once these surfaces have dried, the contractor can apply a prime coat and then proceed to fill any holes or cracks with wood putty or plastic wood, sanding smooth again afterwards.

For interior wood and metal trim that has previously been painted, the contractor is to touch up bare surfaces with an alkyd enamel primer-sealer and then apply two coats of an acrylic semi-gloss enamel. Interior “stained to match” wood trim and handrails are to be prepped and coated with one water-borne urethane stain and two coats of a water-borne acrylic enamel clear coating system.

As for any interior metal assemblies that are exposed to view, these surfaces are to be shop primed and receive one coat of a modified epoxy and one coat of an acrylic polyurethane. The contractor will also be responsible for applying a latex wood primer and two coats of modified epoxy to exterior wooden windows.

In addition to these coating applications, the contractor must also be sure to coat both sides of all plywood backboards for electrical panels with one coat of an alkyd enamel primer and two coats of a gloss alkyd enamel.

Owner-specified brands are Benjamin Moore, ICI Devoe, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Pratt & Lambert or an approved equal.
