To help workers in the construction industry identify fall hazards and learn how to create a fall protection system, the American Society of Safety Professionals released a virtual reality app that trains users in settings that mirror actual environments, without the associated dangers.

The ASSP VR Fall Protection Experience, which also provides cheaper training and acts as an alternative for when hands-on experiences aren’t viable, according to ASSP, adheres to ANSI/ASSP Z359 Fall Protection and Fall Restraint standards.

“Virtual reality is an innovative tool that enables a worker to be trained and evaluated without ever putting that employee in a precarious position,” said Keisha Raines, manager of online learning at ASSP. “Studies have shown that the closer you can replicate reality in your training environment, the more the training experience will stick.”

The app provides a three- to five-minute exercise. When engaged, users wear a headset and interact with a virtual environment to learn how to work safely in environments where fall hazards are a concern. In the exercise, the user navigates the roof of a two-story building, identifying common fall hazards such as a skylight or a rooftop fan detached from its base. From there, the user builds a fall protection system by choosing four anchor points, three harnesses and three lanyards. Users get to see what they build in action, with an assessment following.

“The app demonstrates that fall protection is a system that needs to be designed rather than just a piece of equipment that will keep you safe,” Kramer said. “It impresses upon the user the seriousness of these life and death decisions and allows them to fail safely.”

The ASSP VR Fall Protection Experience was introduced at Safety 2018, a conference dedicated to educating industry members about workplace safety.
