California’s Labor Commissioner’s office has recently issued several citations to an industry company amounting to nearly $2 million in wage theft violations.

Officials said they opened an investigation after workers complained through a nonprofit organization, Carpenters Contractor Cooperation Committee, and found that the company had failed to provide required rest periods, failed to pay nearly 300 works for overtime work and paid less than minimum wage to nearly 30 workers.

“In construction, unscrupulous contractors attempt to obscure their wage theft by paying workers a flat rate rather than for all hours worked,” said Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su. “But a daily or other flat rate system does not take the place of minimum wage and overtime obligations.”

Out of the $1.9 million, about $800,000 comes from rest periods, $387,000 in unpaid overtime, $692,000 for wage statement violations, $14,000 for shortages of minimum pay and $72,000 in civil penalties.
