China's 'Sidescraper' Complex Near Complete

China’s record-breaking Raffles City Chongqing is now reportedly 80 percent complete, with six out of the eight skyscrapers topping out. The project’s finale remains to be seen, however.

Dubbed “The Conservatory,” a 820-foot-high, 980-foot-long skybridge (which will house an array of amenities) is slated to connected China’s tallest residential tower and Chongqing’s tallest building.

The Project

Designed by architect Moshe Safdie and led by developer CapitaLand, the project will eventually hold homes, shops, offices, entertainment transportation links and a public park.

In addition to connecting two of the region’s tallest towers, the skybridge will connect four of the main towers at the 42nd floor—the top floor, which accommodates necessary sway in the earthquake zone in which the buildings sit.

The Conservatory will reportedly use frictional pendulum bearings and seismic dampers mounted on the towers for flexibility and will weigh 12,000 tons, enclosed in a ring of glass and aluminum panels.

For the building process, the structure is divided into nine segments, four built above the four towers and three middle segments, which will be prefabricated and hoisted into place; the ends will be assembled last.

Other, smaller cantilever skybridges will connect the adjacent towers, meaning that workers and residents can move around the comples without having to go to ground level, which is the entire point, according to the architect.

“It’s going to become like the heartbeat of the city,” Safdie told The Guardian. “In these dense cities like Chongqing there’s no room for big public parks [on the ground], so we have to lift them into the sky.”

The Guardian reports that about 6,000 workers are at the $3.5 billion megasite on a given day, which encompasses 1.12 million square meters.
