Time is running out to submit your nomination to Durability + Design's second annual Elevation Awards. D+D is calling for facility owners, architects, contractors, suppliers and others to enter our program that honors projects in a range of categories.

Elevation Awards

Entries for the awards will be accepted until 11:59 p.m., this Friday, July 27. For details about how to register, entry forms, judges, fees and honors visit www.durabilityanddesign.com/elevation.

“We are pleased to kick off the second annual Elevation Awards nomination process,” said Brion Palmer, CEO of Technology Publishing. “It is exciting to promote and recognize high-quality, innovative work that inspires the industry. The D+D Elevation Awards is the perfect complement to the editorial mission of the brand.”

Also new this year, D+D will be partnering with our sister publication PaintSquare Press, which will highlight awards nominees and also feature the 2018 winners in its fall and winter issues, respectively.

Winners will be formally announced via webinars on durabilityanddesign.com.

“I am excited to see what this year has in store for the Elevation Awards,” said Brandy Hadden, editor of Durability + Design News. “Last year featured such impressive projects—such as California’s Golden 1 Center, which won our Judges’ Choice Award—and I’m hoping that now, in its second year, the Elevation Awards will attract even more nominees so we can showcase the talent of this industry.”

Categories and brief descriptions for this year’s awards are listed below.

Aesthetics Award Categories

Exteriors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve aesthetic effects that enhance the exterior of a commercial building—such as those used for retail, hospitality, lodging or entertainment—or a public building, such as a legislative chamber, a school or a railway station.

Interiors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior of a commercial or public building. Examples include buildings used for retail, hospitality, restaurant, entertainment, transportation and education.

Renovation/Retrofit

This award is given for use of coatings to enhance the appeal of a building renovation or retrofit, in terms of both aesthetics and functional value, such as energy performance. (The project may be a residential, commercial or public structure.)

Green Building

This award is given for the effective use of environmentally sustainable coatings and practices to enhance either the interior or exterior appearance of a commercial, public or residential building in either new-build or renovation work.

Technical Award Categories

Floor Coatings + Treatments

This award is given for outstanding achievement in selection and installation of a floor coating or treatment that excels in aesthetic effects, durability and maintainability. (Applications must make a persuasive case for how a project achieves durability/maintainability.)

Tremco Roofing & Building Maintenance

The mammoth roof of Ford Field, a multipurpose indoor stadium that serves as home to the National Football League's Detroit Lions, won a 2017 Elevation Award for Roof Coatings.

Air Barriers + Moisture Management

This award is given for a liquid-applied air barrier system, including related taping and flashing materials, that excelled in design and installation detailing. (Applications must include photos of the project in progress, and reference to specifications/design documents.)

Roof Coatings + Systems

The Roof Coatings award will be given to a successful roof coating project that has achieved demonstrable energy savings and life extension of the roofing substrate on a building. (Projects must be judged on technical merits, with energy use measured during the past three to five years. Applications can reference energy cost records and include an endorsement/statement from the building owner.)

Green Building

This award is given for the effective use of environmentally sustainable coatings, systems and practices in a commercial, public or residential building in either new-build or renovation work.

Judges' Choice Award

Drawing from individual category winners, judges will select an overall winner to receive the Judges' Choice Award, which recognizes an outstanding architecture project that best exemplifies the seamless combination of compelling aesthetics and high performance in use of coatings and other substrate treatments.

Expert Judges

The Elevation Awards will be judged by six experts in the fields of color, design, renovations, building-envelope technology and others.

The 2017 D+D Elevation Awards were presented during a breakfast reception on Sept. 14, 2017, at the Lippitt House Museum in Providence, Rhode Island. The judges are:

  • Billy Rosbottom, Creative Director, Sto Corp.;
  • Jill Pilaroscia, IACC, Colour Studio, Architectural + Product Color Consultation;
  • Jeff Theo, PCS, Vice President of Business Development, Vulcan Painters;
  • Kenneth A. Trimber, PCS, President, KTA-Tator Inc.;
  • Jennifer Crisman, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Euclid Chemical; and
  • Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D, P.Eng., Building Science Corp.

“I am pleased that Durability + Design has invited me to return as a judge for the 2018 D+D Elevation Awards,” said Trimber. “Serving as a judge for the 2017 awards gave me the opportunity to review the ‘behind the scenes’ design and construction work that is critical to the successful execution of projects.

“The Elevation Awards are as much a tribute to planning, implementation and resilience as they are to the aesthetics and functionality of the final product. I’m looking forward to once again reviewing the many details of the candidate projects and together with the other judges, agreeing on those that will be recognized with a 2018 D+D Elevation Award.”
