French photographer Zacharie Gaudrillot-Roy recently released a new batch of photos in his ongoing series “Facade,” which looks at the importance of architecture’s first impression.

“The facade is literally the first thing one sees of a building, as its surface,” the photographer says on his website. “It can be imposing, superficial but can also suggest safety.”

French photographer Zacharie Gaudrillot-Roy recently released a new batch of photos in his ongoing series “Facade,” which looks at the importance of architecture’s first impression.

In the series, which began in 2009, Gaudrillot-Roy captures a streetscape and then digitally removes the bulk of the buildings, leaving just the faces of the structures.

Most of the images are captured at twilight and don’t show any people.

“I've always liked to wander around in a city, I walk through the streets with those questions in mind: What will happen if we stick to that first vision? If the daily life of 'The Other' was only a scenery? This series thus offers a vision of an unknown world that would only be a picture, without intimate space, where looks are the only refuge.”

Gaudrillot-Roy notes that one of the functions of a building’s facade is to draw people in and “inspire curiosity.” The photo series is supposed to question how people go about their habitation and bring a sense of strangeness to the environment that surrounds us.
