The Town of Belmont, Massachusetts, is looking for contractors to paint the interior of a cafeteria at a historic elementary school.

The original Daniel Butler School was built in 1873, named the Waverly Village School. In 1895, the school was renamed after the Rev. Daniel Butler, a former president of the American Bible Association. At the turn of the century, the school's population outgrew the building, and in 1900 the current elementary school was built. Its most recent major renovation took place during the 1980s and now houses more than 300 students. It is the oldest building in Belmont that still serves the community.

The original Daniel Butler School was built in 1873, named the Waverly Village School.

There is a mandatory pre-bid meeting on July 17. Bids for this contract are due July 24.

Scope of Work

The awarded contractor is responsible for the labor, materials and equipment necessary for the coating of the interior of an existing cafeteria. Before the coating can be applied, the contractor must first properly clean all surfaces to be painted per manufacturer's recommendations.

The contractor is advised to wash all surfaces 72 inches above floor finish to the floor and mauve surfaces with a heavy-duty cleaner (TSP) or equivalent. If any old coatings remain on the mauve surfaces, these may be removed by methods of scuff sanding and rewashing until they’ve reached a sufficient state. Doors are to be machine-sanded with 120 grit sandpaper and wiped clean. Handrails are also to be sanded and thoroughly cleaned so that no old gloss remains.

Once all surfaces have been properly prepared, the contractor may begin the coating process. During this time, the contractor may apply a primer and two coats of an eggshell latex finish to the gypsum ceiling and surrounding walls. The wooden handrails are to receive two coats of a high-gloss polyurethane or equivalent. Previously mauve surfaces are to be sealed with a water-based sealer and a top coat tinted with 10 pecent of the new color. All doors, frames, base molding, stage apron, chair rails and other various surfaces are to receive two coats of a semi-gloss latex application.

The estimated cost for this project is $20,000. The owner-approved brand is Sherwin-Williams.
