Construction on the $2.6 billion stadium project, located in Inglewood, California, and future site of the 2028 Olympics closing ceremonies, topped out in late June, marked by a celebration of 2,000 workers, politicians, businesspeople and team executives.

The highest beam in the stadium—the root of celebrating the structure “topping out”—was marked with the logos of the National Football League's Rams and Chargers, along with companies involved with construction; it was also signed by everyone involved in the project, according to Inglewood mayor James Butts.

Stadium Project

The Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park site, being transformed, was once the Hollywood Park Racetrack, situated on 298 acres of land, four miles from the Los Angeles International Airport.

According to the district’s website, the area will also feature a 6,000-seat performance venue; 780,000 square feet of office space; 890,000 square feet of retail space; 300 hotel rooms; 2,500 residences; 25 acres of public parks, open space, as well as pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths; and areas for family and fine dining.

As far as features, a 120-yard video screen, known as the Oculus, will encircle the top of the open-air stadium, with a clear roofline above allowing light to shine down on those in seats or luxury suites.

Dallas-based FC Construction Services was one of the firms tapped to provide services for the Inglewood Stadium—namely 12 full-height, restricted access turnstiles, which will yield data regarding drug screening, access control and labor analytics.

Topping Out

Work is 40 percent complete, according to Curbed LA, with concrete columns and other elements needed to support the roof canopy being installed now. The Oculus has not yet been installed, however.

In the ceremony that marked the topping out of the stadium, Butts said words of praise honoring Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who has been privately funding construction since the Rams moved to Los Angeles in 2016. Kroenke was also reportedly keeping his promise in hiring qualified local residents as well as entry-level interns over the course of the endeavor. (The Inglewood mayor also went on to note that even though the venue is privately funded, that this is the exception rather than the rule for venues like this.)

According to NBC Southern California, over 4 million hours of labor have go into construction since its inception in November 2016. Work is occurring around the clock: 1,500 workers are on day shift, with 500 working night shift. A significant amount of work yet remains, however, given that the stadium is not expected to be ready by the 2020 NFL season.

"There's a lot of work to be done, but when you take the team down in the hole like we did two weeks ago, watch Jared Goff throw a pass, watch Johnny Hekker punt into the upper deck, I think you get excited for the future of football in Los Angeles," said Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff.
