You requested, we listened! For those of you who didn’t get a chance to submit your projects for Durability + Design’s second annual Elevation Awards, the deadline has been extended.

Elevation Awards

Nominations will now be accepted until 11:59 p.m. ET July 27.  For details about how to register, entry forms, judges, fees and honors visit www.durabilityanddesign.com/elevation. Some companies with projects already nominated include Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance, Linetec, Sika Corporation, APV Engineered Coatings and Tnemec Company Inc.

About the Awards

D+D’s awards program honors projects in both aesthetic and technical categories—ranging from residential exteriors and commercial renovations to floor coatings and air barriers—and new this year, the awards will be recognizing those projects that excelled in sustainability.

Also new this year, D+D will be partnering with our sister publication, PaintSquare Press, which will highlight awards nominees and also feature the 2018 winners in its fall and winter issues, respectively.

Winners will be formally announced via webinars on durabilityanddesign.com.

“I am excited to see what this year has in store for the Elevation Awards,” said Brandy Hadden, editor of Durability + Design News. “Last year featured such impressive projects—such as California’s Golden 1 Center, which won our Judges’ Choice Award—and I’m hoping that now, in its second year, the Elevation Awards will attract even more nominees so we can showcase the talent of this industry.”

Categories and brief descriptions for this year’s awards are listed below.

Aesthetics Award Categories

Exteriors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve aesthetic effects that enhance the exterior of a commercial building—such as those used for retail, hospitality, lodging or entertainment—or a public building, such as a legislative chamber, a school or a railway station.

Tnemec Company Inc.

Interiors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior of a commercial or public building. Examples include buildings used for retail, hospitality, restaurant, entertainment, transportation and education.

Renovation/Retrofit

This award is given for use of coatings to enhance the appeal of a building renovation or retrofit, in terms of both aesthetics and functional value, such as energy performance. (The project may be a residential, commercial or public structure.)

Green Building

This award is given for the effective use of environmentally sustainable coatings and practices to enhance either the interior or exterior appearance of a commercial, public or residential building in either new-build or renovation work.

Technical Award Categories

Floor Coatings + Treatments

This award is given for outstanding achievement in selection and installation of a floor coating or treatment that excels in aesthetic effects, durability and maintainability. (Applications must make a persuasive case for how a project achieves durability/maintainability.)

Tremco Roofing & Building Maintenance

The mammoth roof of Ford Field, a multipurpose indoor stadium that serves as home to the National Football League's Detroit Lions, won a 2017 Elevation Award for Roof Coatings.

Air Barriers + Moisture Management

This award is given for a liquid-applied air barrier system, including related taping and flashing materials, that excelled in design and installation detailing. (Applications must include photos of the project in progress, and reference to specifications/design documents.)

Roof Coatings + Systems

The Roof Coatings award will be given to a successful roof coating project that has achieved demonstrable energy savings and life extension of the roofing substrate on a building. (Projects must be judged on technical merits, with energy use measured during the past three to five years. Applications can reference energy cost records and include an endorsement/statement from the building owner.)

Green Building

This award is given for the effective use of environmentally sustainable coatings, systems and practices in a commercial, public or residential building in either new-build or renovation work.

Judges' Choice Award

Drawing from individual category winners, judges will select an overall winner to receive the Judges' Choice Award, which recognizes an outstanding architecture project that best exemplifies the seamless combination of compelling aesthetics and high performance in use of coatings and other substrate treatments.

Expert Judges

The Elevation Awards will be judged by six experts in the fields of color, design, renovations, building-envelope technology and others.

The judges are:
