Architect Frida Escobedo has completed her take on the Serpentine Pavilion, which opens to the public on Friday (June 15).

Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens, London, the courtyard-style pavilion features walls of staggered concrete roofing tiles, a curved mirrored ceiling and a pool of water. The structure is meant to be a reimagination of the celosia, a block wall that allows light and air to filter through it, commonly found in Mexican residential architecture.

The Design

The concrete roof tiles are stacked in an alternating pattern, with decorative detail on the corners. That stacking, combined with the reflectance from the ceiling and pool of water, provide for a multitude of distorted reflections inside the pavilion.

"The materials are quite simple," said Escobedo. "This is something that we usually do—we know how to work with simple materials and simple geometries but in complex ways.”

"These concrete tiles are woven, like a tapestry, in a very specific pattern that becomes transparent when the light is behind the wall."

The pavilion’s shape comprises of two overlapping rectangles; one runs parallel with the Serpentine Gallery and the other runs parallel to the Prime Meridian.

The Architect

Escobedo is the 18th architect commissioned to the design the prestigious pavilion. She is the youngest architect ever tapped for the project and is the first solo woman since the inaugural pavilion, designed by Zaha Hadid in 2000.

The pavilion will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time from June 15 to Oct. 7. After that, it will be moved to another location that is to be determined.
