With just days left to submit an entry for Durability + Design’s second annual Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (June 15) with featured selections of this year’s nominees, giving readers a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Exteriors, Commercial + Public Buildings” category.

Project: The Forge

The look of luxury apartment complex The Forge, in Long Island, New York, was the result of an extensive collaboration between owner, contractor, designer and manufacturers. The wedge-shaped, village-style high-rise is covered in an aluminum wall-panel system with an anodized copper coating, giving the building a very distinct appearance with the goal to never wear.

Brause Realty Inc. and Gotham Organization developed the 38-story, 266,000-square-foot structure to appear like four separate buildings with a wafer design to accommodate strict zoning requirements, and when it came to the look of the outside, officials wanted something specific.

Designer FXCollaborative specified 92,000 square feet of Dri-Design aluminum panels with the Linetec coating to get the copper look without the worry of rust.

“Linetec’s copper anodized finish was the look that the architect designed around,” said Dri-Design’s Tyler Fowler. “The natural variation that is expressed on the facade through the copper anodizing process was a desired look.”

Linetec’s Tammy Schroeder, a LEED Green Associate, notes that the anodized copper finish allows for the look of real copper without salt run-off stains, galvanic corrosion, patina or intensive maintenance.

This facade route was also chosen in part because the building is aiming for LEED Silver status. To start, the wall system was manufactured entirely from recycled materials and will remain 100 percent recyclable.

The etching from anodized finishing process was done in an eco-friendly way as well, and the finish meets the American Architectural Manufacturers Association’s AAMA 611 Class I Specification.
