Global coatings giant AkzoNobel (Amsterdam) is continuing its expansion in Asia with the start of production at its new powder coatings plant in Changzhou, China.

The plant—which Akzo calls a “40 million euro investment”—will supply a range of Interpon and Resicoat products to meet the growing demand for sustainabile products, the company says, in key markets such as automotive, architectural and general industrial sectors.

“China is a high priority region for us and the new facility is part of ongoing plans to optimize our production and investment strategy, based on increasing demand,” explained Ruud Joosten, AkzoNobel’s Chief Operating Officer.

“Our passion for paint will continue to be the driving force for us to provide best-in-class sustainable solutions while expanding our footprint globally to drive growth.”

AkzoNobel notes that, in addition to producing VOC- and solvent-free products, the plant is also striving for sustainability by using a vacuum drum waste water recycling system, with the hope to achieve zero waste water emissions.

Other Asian Pacific Expansions

The company has made several moves in the region within the past few years, including an acquisition in November 2017 of V.Powdertech Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of powder coatings for consumer products in Thailand; and the opening of a $11.7 million powder coatings facility in Chengdu, China, in January 2017.
