AFL Architects

United Kingdom-based design firm AFL Architects have recently released design renderings for its renovation of Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium, part of a 10-stadium commission to get Turkey ready for a hosting bid for the UEFA European Championships in 2024.

“This partnership with the [Turkish Football Federation] is an exciting development for the practice. Being involved at such an early stage of a major event is a fantastic opportunity, and one where we are able to demonstrate the full potential of our expertise,” said AFL director John Roberts.

The Design

Although AFL is renovating three stadiums, the Ataturk Stadium renovation is the most significant, and will take the venue from a capacity of 76,092 to 92,208, as well as eliminate the athletic track around the perimeter.

These renovations will happen in two phases in order to keep the stadium in as much use as possible: the first for the lower tier, concourses and play facilities, and the second for the upper tiers, which will include skyboxes and lounges.

In addition to the inner-footprint change, the stadium’s envelope will receive a significant upgrade in the form of a white glassfibre-reinforced exoskeleton with what the firm calls “wind capture technology” that will help the stadium generate energy from the wind.

That outer design will also contain a vibrant cladding, inspired from historic Turkish hats and artwork. A 360-degree, 65-foot-high video wall inside will complete the transformation.
