3-Alarm Fire Guts Multiple CO Projects

A three-alarm fire that officials say was similar to a blaze earlier this year destroyed two townhome buildings under construction last week (May 10) in Denver.

No one was injured in the blaze, however, one nearby residential building suffered damage, but those inside were able to escape safely.

The Fire

According to FOX31 Denver, each Denver Grove unit would have had three bedrooms and three bathrooms, with a completion date set for the spring. The townhomes were being developed by the Australian Development Consortium.

"This was a significant fire and anytime you have a building that’s under construction, it has the possibility of catching fire easier, than say, you or I’s home," said Denver Fire Captain Greg Pixley. "There’s no finished material on here. It’s sticks. It’s just boards. When you expose heat to that than it can ignite and takes off very quickly."

The slot-home structures—two wood-frame stories built over a concrete first floor, oriented sideways town homes on smaller lots—were a total loss, according to The Denver Post. The structures were each priced in the upper $600,000s to $700,000s.

According to a broker for Kentwood City Properties, where the homes would have eventually been listed, the drywall had not been hung yet.

“We have to approach every fire assuming the worst and rule out those questions,” said Pixley. “We’re going to investigate every indication and every clue that we can find that will help make a determination of what caused the fire."

Pixley recalled the similarities to a fire in March, which was also a three-alarm call in nearby Emerson. That blaze killed two people and injured six others. Pixley noted that the more recent fire had the capacity of the fire in Emerson, but the “fire could have been worse had we not gotten on scene when we did.”
