Specialty chemicals company Clariant (Muttenz, Switzerland) recently announced the development of new additives that the company says represent a step toward more environmentally friendly interior coatings.

The company says that its new multifunctional neutralizer Genamin Gluco 50, and a new stabilizer system, Dispersogen SPS/SPV, are for breathable biocide-free paints.

Specialty chemicals company Clariant (Muttenz, Switzerland) recently announced the development of new additives that the company says is a step for more environmentally friendly interior coatings.

"With architectural paints and especially environmentally friendly solutions expected to grow at an above average rate in the U.S. through 2019, Clariant is excited to introduce new additive solutions that contribute towards a healthier future for the region's thriving indoor paints segment," said Ruzmir Niksic, Clariant's Head of Regional Business Line North America for Business Unit Industrial & Consumer Specialties.

Clariant says that Genamin Gluco 50 can reduce complex formulations with a single additive and can keep the products within the low-VOC/SVOC limits of stringent regulations and eco-labels.

The low-odor additive improves storage stability in colder regions, increases tinting strength and reduces formation of flash rust on ferrous metals, according to the company.

The Dispersogen SPS and SPV are also suitable for eco-label, biocide-free paints, the company says, and notes that biocide-free paint based on these stabilizers has an enhanced rheology profile, which Clariant says would make it both easier to stir and homogenize before use and to apply.
