Do you know of a recent coating project that deserves to be recognized for excellence in aesthetic or technical effects? If so, be sure to nominate it for Durability + Design’s second annual Elevation Awards competition.

“I am excited to see what this year has in store for the Elevation Awards,” said Brandy Hadden, editor of Durability + Design News. “Last year featured such impressive projects—such as California’s Golden 1 Center, which won our Judges’ Choice Award—and I’m hoping that now, in its second year, the Elevation Awards will attract even more nominees so we can showcase the talent of this industry.”

Nominees can be designers who used coatings to achieve excellence on a project, or applicators who demonstrated great skill in executing a painting project, between March 2, 2017, and March 1, 2018.

To make sure your project or that of a colleague’s is in the running, submit your nomination by 11:59 p.m. ET June 15.

With expertise in color, design, specification, renovation, building envelope technology and more, our panel of esteemed industry professionals will judge the technical and aesthetic merits of projects across nine categories.

Projects can be nominated in more than one category, with a separate nomination and entry fee required for each.

Aesthetic

Exteriors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve aesthetic effects that enhance the exterior of a commercial building—such as those used for retail, hospitality, lodging or entertainment—or a public building, such as a legislative chamber, a school or a railway station.

Interiors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior of a commercial or public building. Examples include buildings used for retail, hospitality, restaurant, entertainment, transportation and education.

Renovation/Retrofit

This award is given for use of coatings to enhance the appeal of a building renovation or retrofit, in terms of both aesthetics and functional value, such as energy performance. [The project may be a residential, commercial or public structure.]

Green Building

This award is given for the effective use of environmentally sustainable coatings and practices to enhance either the interior or exterior appearance of a commercial, public or residential building in either new-build or renovation work.

Technical

Floor Coatings + Treatments

This award is given for outstanding achievement in selection and installation of a floor coating or treatment that excels in aesthetic effects, durability and maintainability. [Applications must make a persuasive case for how a project achieves durability/maintainability.]

Air Barriers + Moisture Management

This award is given for a liquid-applied air barrier system, including related taping and flashing materials, that excelled in design and installation detailing. [Applications must include photos of the project in progress, and reference to specifications/design documents.]

Roof Coatings + Systems

The Roof Coatings award will be given to a successful roof coating project that has achieved demonstrable energy savings and life extension of the roofing substrate on a building. [Projects must be judged on technical merits, with energy use measured during the past three to five years. Applications can reference energy cost records and include an endorsement/statement from the building owner.]

Green Building

This award is given for the effective use of environmentally sustainable coatings, systems and practices in a commercial, public or residential building in either new-build or renovation work.

Judges’ Choice

Drawing from individual category winners, judges will select an overall winner to receive the Judges’ Choice Award, which recognizes an outstanding architecture project that best exemplifies the seamless combination of compelling aesthetics and high performance in use of coatings and other substrate treatments.
