Kanye West to Dive into Home Design?

Rapper and fashion designer Kanye West took to Twitter last weekend to announce a new venture for his Yeezy company: architecture.

“We’re starting a Yeezy architecture arm called Yeezy home. We’re looking for architects and industrial designers who want to make the world better," he wrote.

The embattled artist and husband of Kim Kardashian recently rejoined the social media platform and has been making headlines since, mostly for his comments on President Donald J. Trump. For those familiar with West’s past, though, his architecture comment is the least surprising.

West first spoke about his interest in architecture in a BBC interview in 2013 when he was promoting his album “Yeezus.”

"I want to do product, I am a product person," said West. "Not just clothing but water bottle design, architecture... I make music but I shouldn't be limited to once place of creativity.

"I'm learning what I want," he said. "This is the reason why I'm working with five architects at a time. The time spent in a bad apartment, I can't get that back. But the education I can get from working on it is priceless."

His tour set designs are also known to be quite elaborate as West has worked with the likes of designer Es Devlin and firm Family New York.

His heavily brutalist-inspired Calabasas studio has also made headlines in the industry, and recently West posted photos of his recently constructed 8,000-square-foot Hidden Hills, California, family home, on which West worked with designer Axel Vervoordt.

Other dips into the industry include: his first short film, which was screened in a specially designed cinema at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival through a collaboration with OMA architects, a rumored partnership with IKEA in 2016 that did not end up coming to fruition and a trip to Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design when he reportedly told students he believes “everything can be saved through design.”
