The California Department of General Services recently awarded Turner Construction with a $520 million design-build contract for its part of a $597 million project that will house the California Natural Resources Agency and other state offices.

The contract, which includes Turner’s architecture partner AC Martin, covers the construction if the 28-story tower, in addition to upgrades to the exterior of the adjacent historic Heilbron House and the additional construction of a child-care center, reportedly the largest such facility constructed by the state.

The California Department of General Services recently awarded Turner Construction with a $520 million design-build contract for its part of a $597 million project that will house the California Natural Resources Agency and other state offices.

Other firms that were already awarded roles in the project include ARUP, FX FOWLE, CO Architects, AECOM and Ascent Environmental.

The Building

The project, known as the “P Street Building,” will house 20 stories of office space and a 300-seat auditorium. It will also offer 10,000 square feet of ground-level retail space, a food court and a pedestrian plaza.

Officials say it will be the workplace of at least 3,500 state employees.

The tower is also aiming to meet LEED Platinum status with zero-net energy standards, with plans for features such as radiant floor heating and reclaimed water systems.

“The HQ will offer much-needed technical and collaboration space for the critical government functions that protect California’s environment and natural resources,” said Grant Griffanti, a Turner project executive.

The building is part of a 10-year plan for the renovation of state facilities in Sacramento. Construction is due to begin later this year and is slated for completion in the summer of 2021.
