Preliminary designs were recently released for the new Las Vegas Convention Center, an $860 million expansion design that’s part of a bigger $1.4 billion overhaul project.

TVS Design (Atlanta), the lead design architect on the project, presented the drawings to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority last week.

The Design

“This is one of the most important days in the history of the LVCVA. These drawings show a modern, innovative design that is as iconic as our vibrant city,” said Rossi Ralenkotter LVCVA chief executive officer.

TVS Design (Atlanta), the lead design architect on the project, presented the drawings to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority last week.

“Southern Nevada’s economy is driven by tourism and this expansion will propel our convention center forward to enable us to maintain our status as the number one trade show destination in North America.”

Early designs show a broad entry featuring an atrium and food court, as well as a rooftop terrace. The design element getting the most attention is being referred to as a “roofline ribbon,” which the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports will serve as a wayfinding system and identify main entrances to the various halls. Designers are also accounting for an outdoor people-mover.

TVS is working with four other companies including TSK Architects, Simpson Coulter Studio, Carpenter Sellers Sel Gatto Architects and KME Architects on the project.

“Our biggest goal was to give Las Vegas a convention center that will be iconic, with a design that nods to all of the very unique architecture in the city’s history, while also providing contemporary, cohesive design aesthetic across the entire property,” said Rob Svedberg, principal, TVS Design.

“Being iconic in Las Vegas is different than being iconic in other places, and we really want this building to be unique in the marketplace and provide something no other convention center can, while also having a strong identity, so that when someone sees it, they immediately know that it’s the Las Vegas Convention Center.”

The Construction

The revamped hall is slated for completion in 2021, making for a tight schedule as preliminary work has only just begun.

The LVCVA noted in its announcement of the design that Geotechnical & Environmental Services Inc. has begun drilling for footing locations and surveying the soil.

According to the authority, the expansion will add 1.4 million square feet to the current convention center.

The bigger Las Vegas Strip project in its entirety is estimated to support 14,000 construction jobs and nearly 7,800 full-time jobs after completion.
