The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited and fined a New Jersey-based construction company six months after an accident killed ex-boxer David Bey.

According to the Department of Labor, AP Construction Inc. (Blackwood, New Jersey) was cited with one willful and three serious violations and fined $151,352 in response to the accident that happened in mid-September.

The Accident

Emergency crews were called to the Camden Towers construction site at around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 where they found Bey, 60, who had been fatally hit by a steel sheet pile.

Bey was working as a pile driver with Local Carpenter’s 179 for AP Construction, a subcontractor on the project.

OSHA inspectors determined that “an improper lifting device was used to place steel sheet piles for an elevator at the Camden Tower Project. While being moved, the sheet piles became disengaged, and fatally struck an employee.”

AP Construction was cited for using that improper device, as well as failing to train employees on lifting hazards.

“This tragedy could have been prevented if proper safety standards were followed,” said Paula Dixon-Roderick, OSHA Marlton Area Office Director. “The equipment used was not configured to adequately handle the lifted material.”

AP Construction has 15 business days to respond and has not commented on the accident.

David Bey

Bey, who was also known as “Hand Grenade,” was a heavyweight contender in the early 1980s. His most famous fight was a loss to Larry Holmes in 1985.

Bey was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame last year.
