Toy manufacturer LEGO recently announced that production of a new line of botanical-themed building bricks has begun, and in addition to emulating the likeness of plants, the toy blocks are being made from plant-based plastic.

The new line, which includes LEGO bricks in the shape of leaves, bushes and trees, is made of soft, durable and flexible polyethylene plastic created from ethanol produced from sugar cane.

According to LEGO, the new line is “technically identical” in comparison with LEGO's conventional plastic. The elements have also reportedly been tested to make sure that the plant-based plastic meets the necessary quality and standards that have been established by the company.

LEGO Group

Toy manufacturer LEGO recently announced that production of a new line of botanical-themed building bricks has begun, and emulating the renewable nature of their plant cousins, the toy blocks are made from plant-based plastic.

Polyethylene elements account for 1 to 2 percent of the plastic produced by LEGO Group, the company noted. The sugarcane is also sourced sustainably, under guidance from the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance whille also being certified by the Bonsucro Chain of Custody standard.

“Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene,” said Tim Brooks, Vice President, Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group.

The move toward plant-based plastics is part of LEGO Group’s initiative to move to all bioplastic production by 2030.

“At the LEGO Group we want to make a positive impact on the world around us, and are working hard to make great play products for children using sustainable materials,” said Brooks. “We are proud that the first LEGO elements made from sustainably sourced plastic are in production and will be in LEGO boxes this year.”

The company has also partnered with the World Wildlife Fund to build demand for sustainably sourced plastic, as well as reduce CO2 emissions.
