Prefab Backyard Pavilion Mimics Dragonfly Wings

For one insect-sensitive client looking to create a space for outdoor living and dining, New York-based CDR Studio Architects designed a prefabricated pavilion that let in light and ventilation, but kept out the elements.

The Dragonfly Pavilion, a 175-square-foot structure arranged in Hoboken, New Jersey, features an intricate timber structure reminiscent of the geometry and transparency of dragonfly wings, according to the architects.

Prefabricated Pavilion

The wing structure uses primary beams like a traditional structure, while also featuring tessellated cells that are distributed evenly, Lea Cloud, founding partner at CDR Studio Architects, said in an interview. These tessellated cells distribute stress onto nearby members.

The geometric cells, filled with insect screening, are made from sustainably harvested and FSC-certified Sapele mahogany, which is attached to a vertical recycled aluminum frame. A patterned, laminated-tempered glass canopy that crowns the pavilion both lets in light and preserves privacy due to its water-like pattern. In all, the structure provides a “sheltered outdoor experience,” according to the architects’ website, that creates a space for reading, dining, yoga and outdoor sleeping.

Pavilion Design

Computer-aided design and manufacturing allowed for a significant amount of digital fabrication, with an algorithm generating a pattern from wing structure. As a result, a digital model was used to keep the fabricator and client on the same page; the fabricator was able to make tweaks as needed. The architects noted that the process both saved time and helped prevent field errors.

The manufacturing model was originally prefabricated in Brooklyn, then disassembled and moved to Hoboken. From there, it was put together and finished within a week.

Situ Fabrication of Basar Girit served as the builder on the project, with Scott Hughman of Silman acting as structural engineer.

The projected was completed in 2013 for $125,000.
