Architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group has partnered with design firm Carlo Ratti Associati to design a 51-story skyscraper in Singapore’s financial district, which will feature a four-story vertical park, a variety of plant life and smart responses within its offices.

Located at the 88 Market Street site, the over 900-foot-tall tower is devised as a vertical community, according to reports, composed of 635,000 square feet (29 floors) of grade A office space, 299 apartment units, retail space and a public park on the ground floor.

The design, which had Singapore firm RSP acting as project architect, is part of a move by the government to make the Raffles Place zone into a greener, more vibrant area that features more public spaces.

Orthogonal lines run through the facade, pulling back to reveal both greenery and social spaces at the base, core and rooftop.

"At multiple elevations, the facade peels open to reveal urban oases for its users and the surrounding city—animating the elegant smoothness of modern architecture with the ubiquitous tropical nature," said BIG founder Bjarke Ingels.

The ground floor design features a public park with spaces for exercise classes, art installations and community events. Walkways through this area lead to a 62-foot-tall open space in the tower’s podium, which houses shopping and dining options, as well as office and residence lobbies. The lower eight floors will also contain 299 apartments, a swimming pool, a jogging track and gym, as well as a residents’ lounge and social kitchen.

At roughly 320 feet up, four interconnected levels are dedicated to a 98-foot-tall vertical park that features a covered spiral stairway at its center. This space also contains sky hammocks, a cafe and a jungle gym.

“In this project, green areas are made accessible to the public at different heights, allowing the city’s exuberance to extend throughout the entire tower,” said Carlo Ratti, founding partner at CRA. “Working in nature will be as essential to the experience of the building, as are the most advanced digital technologies, offering us a glimpse of tomorrow’s offices.”

The uppermost 29 floors contain office spaces, as well as a sky terrace on the rooftop, a restaurant and Singapore’s highest urban farm. On the technological end, the skyscraper will have sensors, Internet of Things-enabled devices and artificial intelligence capabilities to allow tenants to fully customize their structure experience.

The skyscraper will be the second tallest building in downtown Singapore, with SOM's Tanjong Pagar Centre taking the title of tallest.

Construction has commenced and is slated for completion in 2021.
