A former Domino sugar site in New York has been made all the sweeter with the completion of a donut-shaped apartment building, the first structure to open at the 325 Kent location. Leasing is now open to prospective tenants, according to reports.

According to DesignBoom, the complex is part of a larger redevelopment of a sugar refinery site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The site itself will feature a 380,000 square foot office campus with a waterfront park, as well as four residential buildings contain 2,800 apartments.

Sweet Apartments

Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by Two Trees Management, the 16-story, donut-shaped building contains 522 apartments that range in size from studios to two-bedrooms; 104 of these apartments have been deemed “affordable” to low-income residents, noted DesignBoom. Studios start at $2,495 a month, going up to $6,137 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit.

Units are ringed around an architectural opening that is closed along the top with a three-story bridge that houses the building’s amenities, including a health club, bike storage and a residents’ lounge. The structure also features a copper facade on the lower floors, with zinc on the upper levels, perforated to create well-lit interior spaces. A 7,000-square-foot roof deck, designed by James Corner Field Operations, crowns the building.

Apartment interiors feature white oak hardwood floors, stainless-steel appliances and large windows.

“The building features incredible outdoor space for residents to enjoy, that will complement the spectacular new waterfront public park coming to the neighborhood next summer,” said Jed Walentas, principal of Two Trees Management.

More 87,000 applications have already been received for the 104 affordable units. Many of the apartments also have a view of the East River and the Williamsburg Bridge.
