‘Skyscraper’ Movie Had Architect Consult

Skyscraper, the newest action thriller starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, features a fictitious 1,067-meter (3,500-foot) tall skyscraper called The Pearl, which called for consulting with a renowned architect to make things as accurate as possible.

In the movie, Will Sawyer, played by Johnson, criticizes the security of the vertical city building, which is claimed to be the safest, most advanced building in the world. Terrorists set the 96th floor on fire, trapping Sawyer’s family and somehow framing him for the whole ordeal.

The Pearl

The top of the fictitious skyscraper features an awkwardly perched sphere, noted ArchDaily, which houses corporate offices and a restaurant. Even though diners would be subject to building sway at that height, other building features display informed influence, such as two feng-shui-friendly holes that align with Hong Kong’s design customs.

There is some industry concern over how the movie displays skyscrapers as dangerous, however. As Sawyer says in the trailer: “Not only have you brought them all indoors, but you’ve trapped them 240 floors in the air. No one really knows what would happen if things go wrong.”

According to MSN, renowned architect Adrian Smith acted as consultant for the movie script. Smith has designed the world’s tallest structures, such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai—currently the tallest building on Earthand the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, which will soon surpass it.

In turn, Johnson was assigned “homework” for the movie, which included reviewing an architectural design book created for the film.

Skyscraper will open in theaters July 13.
