A Florida developer whose portfolio already includes the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye is setting its sights closer to Walt Disney World with a proposed $1 billion development: O-Town West.

Unicorp National Developments Inc. President Chuck Whittall recently spoke about the project, telling the Orlando Sentinel that even though it could take nearly a year to get all of the necessary approvals, he has high hopes for the project.

“We’re trying to create a whole place. We’re trying to create a complete sense of place with dining, entertainment, shopping and living,” Whittall said.

The 82 acres are slated to include 100,000 square feet of retail, a 15,000-unit multi-family apartment complex (to be built by Roger B. Kennedy Inc.), 400 homes and a 600-space parking garage.

The homes and apartments will overlook a recreational lagoon, taking on a feel that the Orlando Weekly likened to nearby Margaritaville Resort. The lagoon will also feature a boardwalk and a fountain, which Unicorp has called “Bellagio-style.”

The project is also slated to include jogging trails and a dog park. And, because of the size of the development, adjustments to Interstate 4 are expected as well.

Despite the permitting process, Unicorp reportedly met with architects earlier this month and says it expects to break ground on the project early next year, with a completion date of mid-2020.

The Orlando Business Journal reports that, while the lagoon specifically doesn’t yet have a named contractor, other businesses involved with the project include Kimley-Horn & Associates Inc. and Miami-based Zyscovich Architects.
