The skyline of Taipei will see something new sprout—a mixed-use skyscraper designed to look like a bamboo shoot, with elements of Western influence mixed in.

Italian multidisciplinary design practice Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel was given the job of designing the structure for Taipei-based developers Riant Capital Limited.

Green and Growing

The Taipei Sky Tower, which is slated to stand at 54 stories, will feature a grooved green glass facade, curved edges and an angled tip, all contributing to the building’s bamboo theme. The design also references the pleated columns found in ancient Greek architecture.

Two Hyatt brands will be housed in the tower—ACPV will also design the Park Hyatt Taipei section of the building, with architecture and design firm Neri&Hu designing the Taipei Andaz hotel. Together, these will be Hyatt's first dual-branded luxury development in Asia.

With the number of visitors to Taiwan expected to reach 19 million by 2020, tower developer Riant Capital is gearing the skyscraper toward travelers who are still uncertain about the consistency of online short-term lodging, but are also tired of conventional hotels.

“We believe this is where the opportunity lies. We want to create a product that is experiential and exciting, and at the same time consistent and operationally well run,” said Aaron Chan, chairman and CEO of Riant.

The skyscraper will also feature an adjoining retail podium that will feature 984 feet of frontage of flagship stores.

Taipei Sky Tower will be located in Taipei’s shopping and financial district, and is slated for completion in 2020.
