World of Concrete Boasts Week of Education, Seminars

World of Concrete, the largest annual international event dedicated to concrete and masonry professionals, launches its 2018 conference today (Jan. 22) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Lasting the entire week, WOC boasts 1,500 exhibiting companies and 55,000 registered industry professionals in more than 725,000 square feet of exhibit space. The event will hold educational sessions, events, tours and awards.


The educational sessions include 90-minute seminars, three-hour seminars, four-hour certification seminars, hands-on trainings and interactive workshops.

The 90-minute sessions revolve around nine tracks including Business Finance & Money Matters; Business Leadership & Management; General Business; Concrete 101; Engineering; Masonry; Residential Construction; Safety & Risk Management; and Technical Updates.

Some 90-minute sessions to note include:

  • Building & Harnessing the Power of an Elite Safety Culture, 8:30-10 a.m., Monday;
  • Managing Expectations—Key to Concrete Polishing Success, 10:30-noon, Monday;
  • Precast in Residential Construction— Enhancing Speed & Quality, 1:30-3 p.m., Monday;
  • Masonry Cracks Prevention: Causes, Design Practices & Repair Methods, 8:30-10 a.m., Tuesday;
  • Understanding & Using ACI 562-16 Concrete Repair Code for Practicing Professionals, 1:30-3 p.m., Tuesday;
  • How the Millennial Generation is Changing the Workplace, 1:30-3 p.m., Wednesday;
  • Numbers Contractors Must Know & Track to Make a Profit, 8:30-10 a.m., Thursday;
  • Curing Concrete: Why We Do it and Why We Care, 1:30-3 p.m., Thursday; and
  • Path of a Concrete Construction Project from Estimate to Closeout, 8:30-10 a.m., Friday.

The three-hour seminars explore six different tracks including Concrete Fundamentals; Concrete Production; Concrete Repair; Concrete Floors & Slabs; Decorative Concrete; and Business & Project Management.

Some three-hour seminars to note include:

  • Tactical LEAN Tools: Maximizing Your Company Culture, 8-11 a.m., Monday;
  • Concrete Repair Fundamentals I: Surface Preparation, Reinforcement Repair, Material Selection & Placement, 1-4 p.m., Monday;
  • Polishing Retail & Industrial Slabs—Design, Construction & Polisher Best Practices, 8-11 a.m., Tuesday
  • What Everyone Receiving Fresh Concrete at the Jobsite Should Know, 8-11 a.m., Wednesday;
  • What is Wrong with My Concrete? —Troubleshooting Concrete Quality, 8-11 a.m., Thursday; and
  • Acid Staining: Advanced Techniques for Flawless Horizontal & Vertical Applications, 8-11 a.m., Friday.

Four-hour certification seminars and exams to note include:

  • ACI Adhesive Anchor Installation Inspector, 8 a.m. – noon, Monday;
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I, 1-5 p.m., Tuesday;
  • ICRI Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician, 8 a.m. – noon, Wednesday; and
  • CFA Residential Foundation Technician, 8 a.m. – noon, Friday.

Hands-On Training sessions take place over multiple days of the conference and include Surveying with Total Stations; Stamped Concrete; Concrete Stenciling; Place & Finish Floors; and Mix Design & Testing Labs.


In addition to luncheons on various topics (Steel-Fiber Reinforced Concrete Floors, Concrete Polishing, and Quality in Concrete Slabs) other events include a live auction and presentations on the construction of the Hoover Dam and Hoover Dam Bypass.

A tour of the Hoover Dam and Bypass Bridge is also slated for noon – 5 p.m. on Friday, and will be led by WOC’s Rick Yelton.

Attendees will meet for an orientation and presentation about the construction of the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, the largest concrete arch bridge in the United States, and discussions will cover engineering challenges, crane work, concrete mix designs, and how the contractor accomplished this special project. Attendees will also stop at the Hoover Dam Visitors Center and Museum.
