The schedule and slate of experts for Architectural Adventures, the travel program of The American Institute of Architects, has been released. Discussions offered during the tours will cover the architecture, history and culture of a given area.

The guides scheduled for the 2018 tours include: Nancy Dunton, Yuji Kishimoto, Martin Moller and Stephen Vogel.

Architectural Adventures

Nancy Dunton, a consultant specializing in the presentation of projects on architecture and a professor at the McGill School of Architecture, will be leading the five-day Montreal tour from May 30 to June 3, 2018.

Dunton has served in the field of management of organizations and architectural projects since 1981. She has also worked as the executive director of Heritage Montreal, a not-for-profit organization focused on the protection of Montreal's architectural heritage.

Nancy Dunton, a consultant specializing in the presentation of projects on architecture and a professor at the McGill School of Architecture, will be leading the five-day Montreal tour from May 30 to June 3, 2018.

"To understand Montreal, visitors need to be immersed—if only for a few days—in the city’s history and culture,” Dunton said. “The buildings we will explore will serve as a way to think about how the city evolved and what it’s like to live in now.”

Yuji Kishimoto, a former teacher of architecture at institutions such as Rhode Island School of Design and the Boston Architectural Center, will be guiding the 13-day Japan’s Allure tour. The tour runs from Oct. 27 to Nov. 8, 2018.

Kishimoto was born and raised in Tokyo, and received his Bachelor of Architecture from Waseda University in Tokyo and his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University in 1965. Kishimoto recently received the Japanese National Medal of Distinction for his efforts to promote academic, cultural and economic relations between the United States and Japan.

“From Tokyo and Takayama to Kanazawa and Kyoto, we will be immersed in the sights, sounds, and tastes of this wonderful country, while experiencing its variety of historical and modern architecture,” Kishimoto said.

G. Martin Moeller has served for more than 10 years on the Board of Advisors for the Tulane School of Architecture, and will be guiding the 10-day Bauhaus and Beyond tour just before the centennial of the design school’s founding. The tour will run Sept. 21-30, 2018.

Moeller works an architectural curator, writer and editor who works both independently and part time as a senior curator at the National Building Museum.

"The Bauhaus was the most fabled design school of the modern era, and its innovative curriculum continues to influence architectural education today,” Moeller said. “Our tour will trace the institution’s brief but dramatic history, with complementary visits to contemporary German landmarks."

Stephen Vogel, the Distinguished Professor of Architecture at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture, will be leading the five-day tour through Detroit, set to run Sept. 25-29, 2018.

Vogel also served as the Dean of Architecture for the Mercy School of Architecture for 18 years.

"I am thrilled to be able to show travelers Detroit’s incredible architecture and the changes to the city I have witnessed over the past fifty years,” Vogel said. “From the distinctive Art Deco skyline and the works of Mies van der Rohe, Yamasaki, and Saarinen, to fabulous historic neighborhoods and contemporary works, you will be surprised and amazed at the design heritage of Detroit."
