The American Society of Concrete Contractors’ Concrete Polishing Council announced last week that it had recently published three new position statements.

Position Statement No. 1, on slab protection, asserts that post-placement and post-polishing slab protection are not the responsibility of the polishing contractor, who is not onsite at those times.

Published in the November issue of the American Concrete Institute’s Concrete International, the CPC issued the statements: “Slab Protection by Others,” “Slip Resistance of Polished Concrete” and “Coordinating the Concrete and Polishing Contractors’ Subcontracts.”

The statements were written by ASCC technical director Bruce Suprenant and reviewed by select CPC members, the organization notes. Sentiments include the following:

  • Position Statement No. 1, on slab protection, asserts that post-placement and post-polishing slab protection are not the responsibility of the polishing contractor, who is not onsite at those times.
  • Position Statement No. 2, on slip resistance, explains that all results of extensive testing shows the dynamic coefficient of friction exceeding requirements, even at very high gloss levels.
  • Position Statement No. 3, on coordinating subcontracts, contends that waiting until after the concrete slab is finished to purchase polished contractor services can result in increased costs and a limited choice of final surface appearances. Because polishing a floor uncovers the slab surface, coordinating this process with initial construction is critical in having a successful project.
