Colfax County, Nebraska, is seeking proposals for improvements at its county courthouse.

The awarded contractor will first oversee that existing site retaining walls and sidewalks are properly cleaned. Any cracks or fractured joints will require the existing caulking to be removed and replaced. Any damage to concrete will be patched and properly repaired. Following all repairs, the contractor will apply various exterior finishes.

Once the walls and sidewalks have been completed, new code-compliant metal handrails and/or guardrails will be installed by the exiting concrete dock, accessible ramp and concrete stairs located along the retaining walls of the exterior perimeter of the site. These rails will be coated with a protective metals application to avoid future corrosion.

Built between 1921 and 1922, the courthouse was constructed to replace the previous courthouse to accommodate the growing population of Colfax County. The structure itself consists of load-bearing exterior and interior masonry walls, steel frame interior and concrete floors. Designed in the vein of the Beaux-Arts neoclassical architectural style, the courthouse features a symmetrical facade, paired pilasters, terra cotta motifs and corners highlighted by brick quoins.

Since construction, the layout and facade have undergone various improvements and renovations including replacing the original wood entry storefronts with an aluminum system, the installation of a concrete ramp for handicap accessibility in 1980, the replacement of the majority of the courthouse windows and the installation of a new sloped metal roof on top of the existing parapet in 2008.

Commencement of work is expected in spring 2018.
