The center piece of New York City’s Hudson Yards construction topped out last week, eight months after construction began in April.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick and developed under Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group, the $150 million interactive public space now stands at its full height of 150 feet.

“Vessel is one of the most complex pieces of steelwork ever made,” Heatherwick said in a statement. “Over the next few months we’ll focus on installing the final details of the structure, as its paving, balustrades, lighting and cladding come together to complete this different kind of public space.”

Heatherwick says that the studio was fascinated by the visual effect to repeating steps—the Vessel has 2,500 steps, 154 flights, 80 landings and 16 stories.

The piece was made in Italy by steel fabricator Cimolai and was shipped over in 75 pieces. The framework includes “raw welded and painted steel contrasts with its polished copper-colored steel underside that reflects the surrounding city,” the studio says.

An inquiry on Friday (Dec. 8) to Hudson Yards and Related Companies regarding what coatings are being used was not immediately returned.

Although the structure is just waiting for the outer elements, it won’t be open to the public until 2019, as the Public Square and Gardens at Hudson Yards is slated to open all at once.
