The seventh stadium under construction for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Qatar, will be the world’s first modular stadium. The design calls for a capacity of 40,000 seats in a structure that will be made of shipping containers.

Other than being a world first, what makes the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium unique is the fact that it can be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere, in a different layout if needed, providing what some call a more sustainable approach to stadium design.

 Modular Stadium

According to The Architects Newspaper, this is the third stadium to be designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects for the World Cup.

With using the shipping containers as building blocks, the stadium can include concession stands, removable seats, bathrooms and merchandise booths. Each piece will be delivered by tanker and assembled onsite, resulting in fewer materials needed for construction, less waste created and a lower carbon footprint in comparison to more traditional stadium construction alternatives.

Upon completion, the stadium aims to receive a four-star Global Sustainability Assessment System certification, which provides a set of guidelines for green design in Gulf countries.

“This venue offers the perfect legacy, capable of being reassembled in a new location in its entirety or built into numerous small sports and cultural venues,” said SC Secretary General H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi in a press release. “All of this in a stadium that delivers the atmosphere fans expect at a World Cup and which we will build in a more sustainable way than ever before.”

The stadium is slated for completion in 2020.
