Mercedes-Benz Stadium Officially Achieves LEED Platinum

On Sunday (Nov. 26), the project team for Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium was presented with its LEED Platinum plaque, officially cementing the structure’s status as the first LEED Platinum sports stadium in North America.

Under general contractor HHRM JV (a joint venture of Holder Construction Company, Hunt Construction Group, H.J. Russell & Company and C.D. Moody Construction Company) with design by international architecture and engineering firm HOK, the 2-million-square-foot, $1.5 billion stadium acquired 88 points to achieve the milestone.

“We set out to build a venue that would not only exceed expectations, but also push the limits of what was possible in terms of stadium design, fan experience and sustainability,” said Arthur Blank, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United owner and chairman.

Design & Achievements

The facility is best known for its one-of-a-kind, camera-style retractable roof, but water and lighting are what earned the stadium the bulk of its credits.

According to an HOK press release, key sustainability characteristics include:

  • First sports stadium to receive all water category credits, due in large part to a highly advanced storm water management system;
  • The stadium uses 47 percent less water than baseline standards due to water-efficient fixtures and conservation infrastructure;
  • The stadium generates renewable power with its 4,000 solar PV panels;
  • The stadium features LED lighting, which will last 10 times longer than standard lights and reduce energy use by as much as 60 percent;
  •  A 680,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater that is repurposed for irrigation and to help run the stadium’s cooling towers (community organization Trees Atlanta has access to the cistern to water its trees);
  • There’s also a stormwater vault that can hold 1.2 million gallons of water in an effort to reduce stormwater runoff and flooding in the neighborhoods surrounding the stadium;
  • Alternative transportation options—including a bike valet program on event days, EV charging stations with capacity to charge up to 48 electric cars simultaneously and new pedestrian-friendly walking paths allowing for more connectivity between communities;
  • Leads the NFL with the highest percentage of fans using public transportation to attend Falcons games—thanks to convenient access to public transportation;
  • Innovative local food production features such as edible landscaping, an urban garden currently in development and partnership with local organizations to train Westside residents in culinary arts and help place them in living-wage jobs in the industry; and
  • A 13-acre green space under development adjacent to Mercedes-Benz Stadium will offer game-day parking and tailgating, as well as arts and cultural events, entertainment and community building on non-event days.

“We set a goal of achieving the highest LEED rating because it was the right thing to do for our city and the environment,” Blank continued. “With this achievement, we have a powerful new platform to showcase to the industry and to our fans that building sustainably and responsibly is possible for a venue of any type, size and scale.”
