More items for Good Technical Practice

Global design and architecture firm Perkins+Will recently announced an update for its Precautionary List and Transparency tools, which includes a more user-friendly digital database.

The Precautionary List—a compilation of problematic materials that people encounter on a daily basis—had formerly been presented as a static list. But with the update, users can search for substances of concern using filters such as project type, product type and health and environmental impacts. The Transparency website itself has also been streamlined for a more user-friendly experience.

Materials Transparency List Update

When it comes to the materials featured on the Precautionary List, Perkins+Will has provided new data, which includes ways people can be exposed to these substances, government regulations and industry rating systems, among other details.

Global design and architecture firm Perkins+Will recently announced an update for both its Precautionary List and Transparency tools, which includes a more user-friendly digital database.

The company has also added a Watch List and a Sunset List. The Watch List covers substances that are suspected of being harmful but have limited data available, and the Sunset List covers substances that once appeared under the Precautionary List, but are generally no longer used, or are used rarely.

Educational Components

The site also now features educational resources, such as understanding the importance of material health, Precautionary List access, a collection of white papers and other recommended reading, as well as an FAQ section.

“Our goal is to spur further industry transformation so that, one day, we can have peace of mind that all materials used to build and furnish our homes, workplaces, schools, hospitals, and other places are healthy and safe,” said Mary Dickinson, senior associate at Perkins+Will and one of three co-chairs of the firm’s Material Performance Research Lab.

“With our updated Precautionary List and Transparency website, we’re helping fellow designers take note of new, emerging, and known health hazards so that they can make more informed product decisions.”

List Incorporation

Perkins+Will also noted that the Precautionary List would be integrated into Portico, a web-based products identification and project management tool currently in development by the Healthy Building Network, Google, Harvard University, Georgia Tech University, the Durst Organization, Home Free and Perkins+Will itself.

“This cross-pollination of industry tools marks the beginning of what we hope becomes widespread consensus about which materials are healthy and which are harmful,” said Suzanne Drake, senior associate at Perkins+Will and the second of three co-chairs of the firm’s Material Performance Research Lab.

“And consensus is essential if we, as a global community of designers, are to make a meaningful, positive, and lasting impact on human health and well-being.”

The Precautionary List has been designed to evolve to keep pace with product transformations and reforumulations.
