The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited a Boise construction firm for its trenching practices.

Last week, OSHA released its citation of Alta Construction Inc. for one willful and two serious violations after failing to follow safe trenching practices, culminating in a $106,000 in fines.

Reportedly, the agency inspected the jobsite of the $65 million project in May after receiving two complaints of the trenching operations. At the site, inspectors found employees working inside a 7-foot-deep trench without any cave-in protection. The trench also did not have any ladders or other safe means of getting out.

“Fortunately, no one was injured, but it is imperative that companies use protective systems in trenches to keep their workers safe,” said OSHA Area Director David Kearns, in Boise.

The company has already taken action against the citation, according to the Idaho Statesman.

This citation comes a little more than a year after a fatal trench collapse in the city, which Kearns called a wake-up call for local professionals.
